ActiveCampaign is a good product with a genuine CRM inside it. If you need the CRM, buy it. If what you actually need is a proper flow builder and a bill that does not climb with your list, this page is for you.
Most comparison pages claim total parity and hope you do not check. We would rather show you the graph, name the twelve triggers, and tell you plainly where our conditions stop — because you will find out in week two anyway, and you will not thank us for the surprise.
Not a linear drip with an if/else bolted on the side. Triggers, sends, waits, conditions, operations and webhooks, wired however the flow actually runs. What you draw is what executes.
The API trigger plus the mid-flow webhook is the pair that matters: your application can start a flow, and the flow can call your application back partway through. That is enough to build a lifecycle programme against a product you actually own.
Our condition nodes branch on opened and clicked. They do not branch on arbitrary field logic — you cannot yet write “if plan = pro AND score > 40 AND country = UK” as a branch inside a flow. You can express that logic in segmentation, and you can drive it from outside via the API trigger and the attribute-changed trigger. But if your automations depend on deep conditional field trees inside the canvas, ActiveCampaign does that today and we do not. That is the honest line, and we are not going to blur it.
ActiveCampaign, like most of the mainstream platforms, bills per contact. That is a legitimate model and they are open about it — but it means your bill is indexed to your success, and the tier you are on tends to move upward on its own.
A model, not a quotation. Calculated at $0.60–$0.95 per 100 contacts per month — the published band across mainstream per-contact providers at these volumes. It is not ActiveCampaign's quoted price and we make no claim about what they charge you today. Check it against your own invoice. The CleverlyBox figures are our real list prices.
The platform is rarely the whole bill. There is usually a list-verification tool priced per check, and increasingly an AI writing subscription in another tab. Four tools, four renewal dates, four support queues.
CleverlyBox collapses all four. Sending is included — no AWS console, no separate SMTP vendor. 16 verification providers are native, and verification status is a segment operator rather than a spreadsheet you re-import. The AI writer sits in the composer, next to the campaign it is writing.
We will not publish ActiveCampaign's feature matrix or their prices as fact — their rate card is theirs and it changes. The right-hand column is a checklist. Open your account and work down it.
| Dimension | CleverlyBox | Check on your ActiveCampaign plan |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing basis | Software. $0 / $20 / $50 / $150 a month. Growth inside the plan costs nothing. | Per contact. Divide last month's invoice by your contact count, then project it at twice the list. |
| Automation builder | Real node graph. 12 named triggers. Wait, tag, list copy/move, field update, and a mid-flow webhook node. | Genuinely strong here. Check which triggers and actions are gated behind a higher tier on the plan you are on. |
| Condition logic | Branch on opened or clicked. Deeper logic lives in segmentation, or arrives via the API and attribute-changed triggers. | Arbitrary field conditions inside the canvas. If you rely on this, it is a real reason to stay — see below. |
| CRM / pipeline | None. We are an email platform and do not pretend otherwise. | A genuine CRM with deals and pipelines. If your sales team lives in it, do not migrate. |
| Sending | Included on every paid plan. No setup, no AWS console, no separate SMTP bill. | Your send allowance and the overage rate above it. |
| Own sender | 9 optional providers from Business: Amazon SES, SendGrid, Mailgun, SparkPost, Elastic Email, Blastengine, Gmail OAuth, Sendmail, any SMTP. | Mainstream platforms send on shared infrastructure and do not let you attach your own SES account. Decide whether that matters. |
| List verification | Native. 16 providers. Verification status is a filterable segment operator. | Any separate verification SaaS — add it to the total. |
| Deliverability | SPF, DKIM, DMARC verified in-app. IP warm-up. Automatic pause on bounce or complaint spikes. RFC 8058 one-click unsubscribe. Blacklist and banned-word checks. | What happens automatically if a send starts bouncing overnight, and whether anyone has to be awake for it. |
| Agencies & reporting | Client sub-accounts, switch-into-client, audit log, seats with per-section permissions (20 on Agency). Reports carry a public URL needing no login. | Per-seat pricing, whether each client needs a separate paid account, and whether a stakeholder can read a report without a seat. |
Three situations where we would tell you, on a sales call, to stay exactly where you are. We would rather lose the deal than lose it in month two.
Deals, pipelines, stages, owners, sales tasks, lead scoring against a sales process. ActiveCampaign has a genuine CRM and it is a serious part of the product, not a checkbox. We are not a CRM and we are not building one. If your sales team works a pipeline every day, buying an email tool that cannot hold a deal is a downgrade, whatever it costs.
If your automations depend on nested conditional trees over custom fields inside the canvas — plan tier AND score AND region AND last purchase — that is their strength and it is not ours today. Ours branch on open and click. If your flow diagram is mostly diamonds, stay.
Mature accounts accumulate integrations, attribution and years of behavioural data. If the thing is running well, the team knows it, and the invoice does not make anyone wince — there is no prize for switching. Come back when the per-contact meter starts to hurt. It usually does.
You can run both platforms in parallel for a fortnight. We would encourage it — a migration you can reverse is a migration you can take calmly.
CSV or XLSX with field mapping as you go. We dedupe on the way in, and anything that fails lands in a downloadable error log so you can see precisely what did not import and why. The REST API takes contacts too if you would rather script it.
We generate DKIM, SPF and DMARC records for you. Paste them into DNS, hit verify, and the app confirms each one is live. Do this before your first real send — it is the step that decides whether the mail lands.
Take your automations one at a time and lay them out as a graph. Be deliberate about the condition nodes — that is where the honest gap sits, so translate field logic into segments or drive it in via the API trigger. If a flow will not translate cleanly you will find out here, on day one, not after you have cancelled anything.
The platform, the verification tool, the AI writer — but only once the flows have run clean for a cycle. That is usually the moment the maths lands.
On structure, yes — it is a real graph, with 12 triggers, waits, tags, list operations, field updates and mid-flow webhooks, and it is not a linear drip pretending to branch. On condition logic, no: we branch on opened and clicked, not on arbitrary field trees inside the canvas. That is the truthful answer. For most lifecycle programmes it is more than enough; for a heavily conditional, sales-driven machine it may not be, and you should test that on the free plan before you touch your billing.
No. We do not do deals, pipelines or sales tasks, and we are not planning to. If you need a CRM, keep one — either theirs, or a dedicated CRM you talk to through our REST API and webhooks. We would rather integrate honestly than sell you something we have not built.
Because we have not audited their current rate card, and publishing a wrong price would be unfair to them and a good reason to distrust everything else here. We describe the model — per-contact billing — which is verifiable on their own site in ten seconds. Our cost figures are a clearly-labelled model with the assumptions printed alongside. Your invoice is the only authoritative number.
Yes, in both directions. Your application can start a flow through the API trigger, and a flow can call your endpoint through a webhook node partway through — not merely at the end. With the REST API and standard webhooks on top, most integrations people ask for turn out to be an afternoon's work.
Test it against your hardest automation on the free plan before you change anything.
